A study of risk factors for preeclampsia in pregnant women aged over 35 living in Southern Kyrgyzstan (Osh region)

Objective. To study the prevalence and risk factors for severe preeclampsia in pregnant women aged over 35 living in southern Kyrgyzstan (Osh Region).
Materials and methods. A retrospective analysis was carried out of 67 birth records at the Osh Interregional Clinical Hospital (2022–2024). The studies included the following groups: women with preeclampsia younger than 35 years (n=39), aged 35 years or older (n=21), and a control group without hypertension (n=7). The statistical analysis was performed using Fisher’s exact test, OR with a 95% CI.
Results. Severe preeclampsia was diagnosed in 73.1% of cases. Significant risk factors were life at high altitude (p=0.008), parity of ≥4 births (p=0.04), a complicated obstetric history (p=0.039), anemia (p=0.048) and being a housewife (p=0.018). The age group ≥35 years demonstrated a trend (p=0.12). Headache, nausea and oedema were observed in 80–92% of severe cases (p<0.001).
Conclusion. In this sample, severe preeclampsia is associated with environmental, social and obstetric factors. Early prevention and close monitoring are necessary for multiparous rural women aged over 35.
