Dear friends and colleagues!

75 years ago, according to the Decree of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR, on the Order of People’s Commissariat for Health of the USSR (#13 of January 6, 1944) the Union Clinical Scientific and Research Institute for Obstetrics and Gynecology was founded as part of the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.

The Institute was successively headed by prominent Soviet obstetriciansgynecologists M.S. Malinovsky, academician and vice-president of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1944-1948), associate professor L.G. Stepanov (1948-1962), professor O.V. Makeeva (1962-1966), professor I.P. Ivanov (1966-1967).

In 1944-1948 M.S. Malinovsky started to develop scientific research in obstetrics and gynecology at the Institute. The 1940-50s were the years of research and development in gynecologic endocrinology (E.I. Kvater, S.K. Lesnoy). The first scientific studies on histophysiology of uterine cervix, endometrium and ovarian precancer pathology started be E.N. Petrova, B.I. Zheleznov founded the basis for future scientific research at the Institute’s pathomorphologic laboratory for many years.

Since 1967 the Directors of the Center for Mother and Child Healthcare were: L.S. Persianinov, academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1967-1978), professors N.M. Pobedinsky (1979-1982) and V.I. Eltsov-Strelkov (1982-1985). For more than 20 years the Center was headed by (1985-2006) the academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, professor V.I. Kulakov, after whom nowadays the Center is named.

These years were also marked with the research in such fields as: maternal-fetal relationship, pregnancy and labor management in case of congenital and acquired heart pathologies, diabetes, anemia, Werlhof’s disease, thyrotoxicosis, suprarenal cortex dysfunction, renal and pulmonary disease, myasthenia, systemic sclerosis (M.M. Shekhtman, T.P. Barkhatova). Vast research was conducted in the field of endocrinology, dedicated to pathophysiology and treatment of climacteric syndrome (E.M. Vikhlyaeva), postpartum neuroendocrine diseases (V.N. Serov). Organizational principles of fetal perinatal healthcare were also elaborated.

For the first time in our country different aspects of premenstrual syndrome were studied in details (M.N. Kuznetsova). Development mechanisms of postcastration syndrome and effective therapy methods were studied and elaborated on another level (I.A. Manuilova). Menstrual function and reproduction disorders, prevention and treatment of gynecologic endocrinologic conditions were successfully analyzed by M.L. Krymskaya and V.P. Smetnik.

Immunology appeared as a new development in reproductive medicine. Besides the leading role of immune system in preserving and developing pregnancy, options to treat current miscarriage, fetal growth restriction and preeclampsia therapy were explored (G.T. Sukhikh, L.V. Vanko).

The year 1986 turned out to be emblematic for the Center. It was marked by the birth of the first ART child in the USSR. More than 30,000 ART children have been born in the Center since then.

One of the major scientific tendencies in neonatology was the study of perinatal disorders of newborns’ nervous system — perinatal neurology (Yu.I. Barashnev). Also, diagnostic and preventive methods as well as the ways of treatment of critical condition in newborns and children with very low and extremely low body weight were worked out. Above all, diagnostic and treatment standards for babies with intrauterine pneumonia, ischaemic nephropathy and intraventricular hemorrhage were developed (A.G. Antonov, E.N. Baibarina). The results greatly contributed to the development of neonatal care delivery in the country.

In 1996, 2000 and 2002 the Center was awarded with the Government Prizes for priority scientific research in IVF area and efferent therapy methods in obstetrics.

Since 2007 the Center has been headed by the academician of RAS, professor G.T. Sukhikh. Nowadays the Center comprises 53 departments and 22 laboratories, with the total number of highly-qualified specialists of more than 2200, which includes 4 Academician of RAS, a corresponding member of RAS and 35 professors and 236 holders of a doctorate degree in medicine. Outstanding notional experts V.N. Serov (president of the Russian society of obstetricians and gynecologists, Academician of RAS) and L.V. Adamyan (Head specialist in obstetrics and gynecology of the Ministry of Health of Russia, Academician of RAS) also work at the Center.

For the last 10 years the landscape and activities of the Center changed significantly. New perinatal and diagnostic centers were built. The number of deliveries increased 5-6 times (8490 deliveries in 2018). The number of surgeries increased eightfold. The possibilities of diagnostics altered profoundly: we use molecular and genetic, molecular and biologic, biophysical, biochemical and bioinformatic methods. Modern equipment complying with the world highest standards (including magnetic resonance, computer-based, singlephoton and positron emission tomographs, ultrasound devices of expert level) was installed throughout the Center.

New institutes were founded as part of the National Center: Institute of Obstetrics (Director – RAS professor R.G. Shmakov); Institute of Oncogynecology and Mammology (Director – Academician of RAS, professor L.A. Ashrafyan); Institute of Reproductive Medicine (Director – professor T.A. Nazarenko); Institute of Neonatology and Pediatrics (Director – professor V.V. Zubkov); Institute of Reproductive Genetics (Director – RAS professor D.Yu. Trofimov).

More than 150 postgraduates and residents study at the Center annually. We also provide continuous professional education for doctors who can master it in the workplace, at the conferences, congresses and professional forums. Our specialists actively take part in the work of the Russian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and collaborate with foreign colleagues.

The Centre also includes the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, Perinatology and Reproductive Medicine of the Institute of Professional Education for doctors and the Department of Neonatology of Pediatric Faculty of the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. The Center has clinical and scientific and research divisions, laboratories, a simulation-training centre, research and development division, scientific library, administration and maintenance division, support services division. We provide scientific and methodical help for branch institutions and field-specific departments of obstetrics and gynecology. National Medical Research Centre for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology named after academician V.I. Kulakov of the Ministry of Health of Russia is the unique and largest scientific, medical and training organization in Russia in the related fields. The Government of Russia has delegated to the Center the responsibilities to coordinate the work of regional clinical centers and institutions across the country.

Academician of RAS Gennady Sukhikh
